Until singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980, Joy Division were one of Britain’s most promising post-punk bands. While the remaining members went on to huge success with the synth-pop band New Order, Joy Division’s legend continued to grow and the band are possibly more popular now than ever before.
Their most famous song is certainly “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” with its iconic introduction and Curtis’s rumbling baritone vocals, but critical attention has primarily been focused towards their two studio albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, which are regarded as two of the greatest albums of all time. Their sound is centred around Ian Curtis’s bleak lyrics and baritone vocals, backed by Bernard Sumner’s spacious guitar sound, Peter Hook’s melodic bass-playing and Stephen Morris’s driving drum rhythms.
